<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xcvzu_YzR_A/T8UXF89niPI/AAAAAAAAASY/0lldENbZbXY/s1600/JOFA+366+Visor+02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-xcvzu_YzR_A/T8UXF89niPI/AAAAAAAAASY/0lldENbZbXY/s640/JOFA+366+Visor+02.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When I first began my interest in JOFA helmets, my goal was to own an actual JOFA 366; just like my favorite player, Teemu Selanne. It took a long time, and a lot of effort, to finally get my hands on one of these! Shown is actually my second 366, the first one I found did not have a front bumper, which was quite a bummer (but gave me a chance to create a great template for creating super accurate modified helmets!).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sjTyBN0CORM/T8UXG4fa51I/AAAAAAAAASg/oyrC3Fxh-8I/s1600/JOFA+366+Visor+03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sjTyBN0CORM/T8UXG4fa51I/AAAAAAAAASg/oyrC3Fxh-8I/s640/JOFA+366+Visor+03.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
But it wasn't without more searching, and a bit of luck, that I finally got my hands on a brand new, complete with packaging and hardware, JOFA half shield. These half shields, from my experience, are nearly as difficult to find as the JOFA 366.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8iBioDntyiM/T8UXIPbImoI/AAAAAAAAASo/iHoP4bDg3to/s1600/JOFA+366+Visor+04.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-8iBioDntyiM/T8UXIPbImoI/AAAAAAAAASo/iHoP4bDg3to/s640/JOFA+366+Visor+04.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The thing that makes these half shields special, is that they fit on the JOFA 290/390/366 helmets perfectly without any need for adding mounting holes to accomodate a half shield. This particular half shield was said to have been obtained from obsolete equipment purchased by the Tampa Bay Lightning; a sticker dates it from 1995.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1Z5Lw-mMSlc/T8UXQL5Nn1I/AAAAAAAAATQ/t1DPu8otSfw/s1600/JOFA+Visir-ett+02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1Z5Lw-mMSlc/T8UXQL5Nn1I/AAAAAAAAATQ/t1DPu8otSfw/s320/JOFA+Visir-ett+02.jpg" width="320" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-siTxbh19pTk/T8UXO5wQVRI/AAAAAAAAATI/SPbHquVQufA/s1600/JOFA+Visir-ett+01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-siTxbh19pTk/T8UXO5wQVRI/AAAAAAAAATI/SPbHquVQufA/s320/JOFA+Visir-ett+01.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here are some pictures of the JOFA Visir-ett packaging; which includes a vague diagram on how to properly install the half shield. It comes with four wide head screws; two 9mm and two 7mm. Also, it includes two black rubber washers; which with a little thinking (no thanks to the diagram), I realized were to fill the sunken holes, where the original screws went. This apparently makes sure that there is no gap between the shield and the helmet, resisting the chance of cracking due to over tightening. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Yw-llXWq1lk/T8UXFQHh-SI/AAAAAAAAASQ/FhGxYQHokNw/s1600/JOFA+366+Visor+01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Yw-llXWq1lk/T8UXFQHh-SI/AAAAAAAAASQ/FhGxYQHokNw/s640/JOFA+366+Visor+01.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When I got this helmet, a few parts were missing; one being the chin strap. But since I have acquired quite a collection, and have helmet parts, including a bunch of removed straps from modified helmets, laying around; I trimmed and melted the edges of a new JOFA strap, and used my finest JOFA snaps to complete. Notice that some snaps have little slits on the side of the dome, which you can see if you look very closely above. I'm not sure why some are like this, but they are more difficult to come across.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SSPeegXPKBY/T8UXJTykkrI/AAAAAAAAAS4/K9T7Qwzyrhs/s1600/JOFA+366+Visor+06.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-SSPeegXPKBY/T8UXJTykkrI/AAAAAAAAAS4/K9T7Qwzyrhs/s320/JOFA+366+Visor+06.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MVzGKiwstZI/T8UXImq72nI/AAAAAAAAASw/UEfJPghsj6c/s1600/JOFA+366+Visor+05.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-MVzGKiwstZI/T8UXImq72nI/AAAAAAAAASw/UEfJPghsj6c/s320/JOFA+366+Visor+05.jpg" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
Finally pairing the JOFA 366 with an actual JOFA half shield really gave me a kick; this is by far my favorite helmet. I remember, as a kid, seeing this helmet, and thinking "that's the coolest helmet I've ever seen". This is still true, I don't know of any other helmet that has such a beautiful, simple, yet complex, design. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Cwa3kI85G0s/T8UXJ8D4JWI/AAAAAAAAATA/uJkAlsyz5fo/s1600/JOFA+366+Visor+07.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Cwa3kI85G0s/T8UXJ8D4JWI/AAAAAAAAATA/uJkAlsyz5fo/s640/JOFA+366+Visor+07.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
So, for all you out there, who have wondered about the JOFA 366 (like God knows I have), here it is! I hope these pictures are what, some of you, have been searching for; I have not found any complete, high resolution pictures of the JOFA 366, so it is my honor to present them to the internet! Enjoy!JOFA Helmet Prohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05034720011118883268noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2530971626343683072.post-59228883405983451772012-05-28T17:17:00.001-05:002012-05-28T17:26:44.736-05:00The JOFA 366 Prototype<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PAlH-gQh60o/T8PnIs-QrII/AAAAAAAAAQ0/NoLHE3MQgFw/s1600/JOFA+366+Vintage+02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-PAlH-gQh60o/T8PnIs-QrII/AAAAAAAAAQ0/NoLHE3MQgFw/s640/JOFA+366+Vintage+02.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Of all the JOFA helmets I have come across, this is the strangest and most mysterious of them all; this is the JOFA 366 prototype. I say prototype because this, to my knowledge, has only been worn by pros; and may have been made custom by the factory. I have mentioned before that early model JOFA 366 helmets had a faux leather front bumper, such as this one; but they don't all have this type of padding, and other details I will mention.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_m55L1p6fI4/T8PnIND-gUI/AAAAAAAAAQs/I1dTLpUBRoA/s1600/JOFA+366+Vintage+01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-_m55L1p6fI4/T8PnIND-gUI/AAAAAAAAAQs/I1dTLpUBRoA/s320/JOFA+366+Vintage+01.jpg" width="320" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-61uixyQQG9A/T8PnJB4I4bI/AAAAAAAAAQ8/STDlbHoDspQ/s1600/JOFA+366+Vintage+03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-61uixyQQG9A/T8PnJB4I4bI/AAAAAAAAAQ8/STDlbHoDspQ/s320/JOFA+366+Vintage+03.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
To begin, it is immediately noticeable that the inner padding is made from soft beige rubber foam. But look closer; the front rivets holding the padding in place are absent, with no sign of removal. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-23R8BvRJJrI/T8PnJikI4lI/AAAAAAAAARE/dmK5cuorLzI/s1600/JOFA+366+Vintage+04.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-23R8BvRJJrI/T8PnJikI4lI/AAAAAAAAARE/dmK5cuorLzI/s640/JOFA+366+Vintage+04.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Now this is where it gets really weird; the ear loops are made from faux leather. It is definitely a factory job, proven by the rivets holding it in place, and the snaps installed on both sides. Even more strange, the cut out for the ear goes over, and around, the embossed edge; where on later versions of the JOFA 366, the cut out leaves a little shelf above the ear.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cgKdN2S0ICU/T8PnKNBGNgI/AAAAAAAAARM/zezLj3ZIEcs/s1600/JOFA+366+Vintage+05.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cgKdN2S0ICU/T8PnKNBGNgI/AAAAAAAAARM/zezLj3ZIEcs/s640/JOFA+366+Vintage+05.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Look closely, here you can see the rear bumper; notice it is also faux leather, stitched onto the helmet!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MRoOqdqRTig/T8PnKpLqQ2I/AAAAAAAAARU/YzQuQNi1p54/s1600/JOFA+366+Vintage+06.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MRoOqdqRTig/T8PnKpLqQ2I/AAAAAAAAARU/YzQuQNi1p54/s640/JOFA+366+Vintage+06.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
If anything proves this is factory made, and not some odd customization; the padding is cleanly cut to fit the form of the helmet, and avoid covering the vents. I wish I knew the story behind this helmet; as well as who used to own and use it!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ki9gfHf3y_Y/T8PnxfeD2pI/AAAAAAAAARk/C1cHvVnZACU/s1600/6967082065_9f6e363024_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ki9gfHf3y_Y/T8PnxfeD2pI/AAAAAAAAARk/C1cHvVnZACU/s320/6967082065_9f6e363024_o.jpg" width="320" /></a><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-59d1Uskzwpo/T8PnxJESYZI/AAAAAAAAARc/RcST1Ly2e_4/s1600/000305024.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-59d1Uskzwpo/T8PnxJESYZI/AAAAAAAAARc/RcST1Ly2e_4/s320/000305024.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
From my research, I have seen the beige padding peeking out around the edges of JOFA 366's worn by the pros, but until I found this helmet, I didn't take much notice. I was pleased to find that Mario Lemieux wore a helmet similar to this! Notice, though, in these pictures his ear loops are narrow plastic, even different from the standard JOFA 366; but you can see that the padding is the same, and that the rivets holding the front padding in place are absent.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-am7-Tn1vTUU/T8PouQUYPTI/AAAAAAAAARs/7fD6YDNCLuA/s1600/savard+366.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="392" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-am7-Tn1vTUU/T8PouQUYPTI/AAAAAAAAARs/7fD6YDNCLuA/s640/savard+366.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Another example shows Denis Savard, wearing a JOFA 366 without front rivets, and what seems to be beige padding around his forehead.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Last, here is Rick Tocchet, wearing a similar JOFA 366, with beige padding, faux leather ear loops and all. On his helmet, the front rivets seem to be in place; and he also swapped out for a white chin strap.
</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
With all the variations of this mystery helmet, my curiosity only strengthens. Please comment if you have spotted a similar helmet, or own one; I would love to learn more.</div>JOFA Helmet Prohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05034720011118883268noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2530971626343683072.post-85359229290427560572012-05-26T14:17:00.002-05:002012-05-26T18:42:37.089-05:00Jaromir Jagr Signature JOFA 390<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
With avid eBay searching, you come across some things you just can't pass up. Finding this new, Jaromir Jagr signed JOFA 390, with tags, certificate, and picture of him signing it, sold by a rather naive seller; I had to get it!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PRokwLGTsqk/T8El1pXbDRI/AAAAAAAAAM0/ELougeds23I/s1600/Jagr+Signing+JOFA+390.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PRokwLGTsqk/T8El1pXbDRI/AAAAAAAAAM0/ELougeds23I/s640/Jagr+Signing+JOFA+390.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Here, scanned from an actual picture; Jagr signs the helmet with a silver metallic Sharpie. Although everything is new on the helmet, it seems Jagr insisted on ripping of the 390 bumper; just as he did on all of his helmets.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rCQ7oBpBMhI/T8EhdVhcW5I/AAAAAAAAAMI/lEeBesI0og0/s1600/JOFA+390+Jagr+Signiture+01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rCQ7oBpBMhI/T8EhdVhcW5I/AAAAAAAAAMI/lEeBesI0og0/s640/JOFA+390+Jagr+Signiture+01.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Originally, the helmet was without a half shield; but with a little more searching, and patience, I found this lightly used pro stock vintage ITECH half shield. You can tell it's pro stock by the logos, and the holes drilled into the sides for fixed mounting without straps. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BTUdVU5a7qU/T8EhfMcu9aI/AAAAAAAAAMg/I3SiA_Es2Hg/s1600/JOFA+390+Jagr+Signiture+04.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-BTUdVU5a7qU/T8EhfMcu9aI/AAAAAAAAAMg/I3SiA_Es2Hg/s320/JOFA+390+Jagr+Signiture+04.jpg" width="320" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hcwuzISU9cU/T8Ehen8snMI/AAAAAAAAAMY/uK1W43vSPLQ/s1600/JOFA+390+Jagr+Signiture+03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hcwuzISU9cU/T8Ehen8snMI/AAAAAAAAAMY/uK1W43vSPLQ/s320/JOFA+390+Jagr+Signiture+03.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
With a little more investigation, noticing that the pro stock shield doesn't fit without forcing the front piece to bend; I found Jagr, or his equipment managers, drilled a set of holes about a half inch forward so that the holes meet up properly. So with careful measurements, knowing I won't be coming across another 15 year old pro stock ITECH shield any time soon, I drilled the holes and mounted the shield. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
These helmets were inspired by the JOFA 297 helmet Teemu Selanne has worn for over a decade during Olympic and World Cup of Hockey tournaments.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--zPVOAIVvQ4/T7_wQW1U7JI/AAAAAAAAALE/r3w5lZ-i4F0/s1600/JOFA+666+Blue+01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/--zPVOAIVvQ4/T7_wQW1U7JI/AAAAAAAAALE/r3w5lZ-i4F0/s320/JOFA+666+Blue+01.jpg" width="320" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CsPOew3sEIc/T7_wSRR6GwI/AAAAAAAAALU/Q6a3imcRIEM/s1600/JOFA+666+Blue+03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CsPOew3sEIc/T7_wSRR6GwI/AAAAAAAAALU/Q6a3imcRIEM/s320/JOFA+666+Blue+03.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
After finding a brand new blue JOFA 390, and some practice with some other helmets (including the helmet I wear in men's league and pick up games); I modified the helmet using a 366 template that I adjusted for full ear loops. I measured a Bauer helmet to pull the dimensions, making sure the modification is structurally strong, and safe to use.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-s4pCwwkemGc/T7_wRaOXwiI/AAAAAAAAALM/IDGmywvk3XI/s1600/JOFA+666+Blue+02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-s4pCwwkemGc/T7_wRaOXwiI/AAAAAAAAALM/IDGmywvk3XI/s640/JOFA+666+Blue+02.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The only thing left to do is find Suomi decals to finish it! But living in the states, and having no luck via the web, has left the helmet bare. Please comment if you have any knowledge how I could obtain these decals!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xxAU-MKcDFI/T7_wTBg_ZpI/AAAAAAAAALc/CGrma1l94EA/s1600/JOFA+666+Blue+04.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xxAU-MKcDFI/T7_wTBg_ZpI/AAAAAAAAALc/CGrma1l94EA/s640/JOFA+666+Blue+04.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
I trimmed the foam to clear the ear loop holes so that they can move inward without restriction. I also carefully tapered the edges (a new technique which I have done with all my recently modified helmets), so that the padding does not grab or pinch when putting the helmet on. It also helps with people, like myself, who wear glasses (yes, I know, it's crazy; I wear glasses while playing with a half shield).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jFI22h-YV9g/T7_wUSbPpvI/AAAAAAAAALk/algbCj1iSmw/s1600/JOFA+666+White+00.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jFI22h-YV9g/T7_wUSbPpvI/AAAAAAAAALk/algbCj1iSmw/s640/JOFA+666+White+00.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Here I have done the same modification with a white helmet. This helmet was used, but I refurbished it. Since the rivets in this older model are silver, I used silver hardware to mount the visor. Also, notice the chin strap, made from the original strap; it has a silver snap and a white buckle (new-er models have black rivets, screws, and snaps).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I did this mod months ago, and during that time, I was unable to purchase white ear loops. Apparently pro teams buy them up, making them nearly impossible to purchase online. So, I just went ahead and installed some black Bauer loops. I think it looks really cool, maybe even better than the white loops would look. I'm really happy with how this turned out; definitely one of the best mods I have ever done.</div>

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PMntwo2QmHA/T7_htpA32xI/AAAAAAAAAKY/TImkPchXiIU/s1600/JOFA+366+Selanne+Rookie+Mod+02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-PMntwo2QmHA/T7_htpA32xI/AAAAAAAAAKY/TImkPchXiIU/s640/JOFA+366+Selanne+Rookie+Mod+02.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
After finding some old CCM ear loops in my basement, I was inspired to do a Selanne rookie helmet modification. All I had to find was an old ITECH aviator half shield, which I luckily got on eBay, attached to a JOFA helmet none-the-less.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-B-BA_yn3W64/T7_hvPMDjKI/AAAAAAAAAKo/Nxu3MY4vubs/s1600/JOFA+366+Selanne+Rookie+Mod+04.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-B-BA_yn3W64/T7_hvPMDjKI/AAAAAAAAAKo/Nxu3MY4vubs/s640/JOFA+366+Selanne+Rookie+Mod+04.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I used old Selanne cards to determine the visor install. Also, I have always noticed that Selanne's early helmets always seemed to have ear loops that flipped out; I discovered why. The design of the CCM ear loops causes the rubber to bend outward when installed, due to the points of mounting being closer together than the manufacturers intended.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DR-qgIVUo04/T7_hs-lF-7I/AAAAAAAAAKQ/VGMWDLUiTZ0/s1600/JOFA+366+Selanne+Rookie+Mod+01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-DR-qgIVUo04/T7_hs-lF-7I/AAAAAAAAAKQ/VGMWDLUiTZ0/s640/JOFA+366+Selanne+Rookie+Mod+01.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
It was difficult finding a white chin strap for some reason, so I settled with what I could find; and of course I swapped out the snap for a JOFA one. I plan on replacing the chin strap with a CCM, when I find one.<br />
<br />

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1eZvi3t3Xag/T7_Z7EFkqqI/AAAAAAAAAJk/H9KGIFhp5HE/s1600/JOFA+366+Selanne+Mod+01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-1eZvi3t3Xag/T7_Z7EFkqqI/AAAAAAAAAJk/H9KGIFhp5HE/s640/JOFA+366+Selanne+Mod+01.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
Using the same techniques as I outlined in my article, "Modifying the Reebok 3K L", I created this Teemu Selanne replica helmet. Since I have not featured one of my refined Selanne mods, I thought I would share this with you.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BARh_sWOKrE/T7_Z7gOkMoI/AAAAAAAAAJs/MbJ_mHp4dhw/s1600/JOFA+366+Selanne+Mod+02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-BARh_sWOKrE/T7_Z7gOkMoI/AAAAAAAAAJs/MbJ_mHp4dhw/s640/JOFA+366+Selanne+Mod+02.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This helmet is built as accurately as I could make it; without tearing one of my 366's apart (which is awfully tempting). I think this is sixth modification I ever did, and is shows if compared to my early work.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-k16am3M0yeA/T7_Zpx6s2hI/AAAAAAAAAJc/pj9WoOABlik/s1600/JOFA+366+Selanne+Mod+05.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-k16am3M0yeA/T7_Zpx6s2hI/AAAAAAAAAJc/pj9WoOABlik/s640/JOFA+366+Selanne+Mod+05.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
For parts, I swapped out the Oakley half shield spacers for Bauer spacers, still using Oakley hardware, used Bauer ear loops, and a hybrid of Bauer and CCM hardware to hold the padding in place. One neat feature I like to add, in order to keep the helmet as JOFA as I can; I took the chinstrap off of the original helmet, and sewed it to create a handmade JOFA strap!<br />

After being drafted into the NHL, Selanne continues to wear his custom JOFA 366 with vintage CCM ear loops; however he trades in the JOFA half shield for an ITECH aviator. Notice his visor mounting; he seems to have an assortment of holes screws in his early years.<br />

<br />
Look closely at these helmets. They not only differ from his later JOFA 366's because of the faux leather forehead bumper, but the padding inside the helmet is beige! I'm not sure, but I believe that either early versions of the JOFA 366, or the pro stock version, has this type of padding. Not shown in these pictures; but the bumper on the back of the helmet is stitched faux leather, not the strip of rubber most of us are familiar with. I plan to feature one of my 366's that are similar to this soon!<br />
<br />

<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-D3X10Z5UcRs/T2JSHmOfdFI/AAAAAAAAAEE/AH-Mk7YXAT8/s1600/Selanne+JOFA+Helmet+09.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-D3X10Z5UcRs/T2JSHmOfdFI/AAAAAAAAAEE/AH-Mk7YXAT8/s1600/Selanne+JOFA+Helmet+09.jpg" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kLJ8pJFO18w/T2JSGuMH1mI/AAAAAAAAAD8/dTR9DXNKHvo/s1600/Selanne+JOFA+Helmet+08.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-kLJ8pJFO18w/T2JSGuMH1mI/AAAAAAAAAD8/dTR9DXNKHvo/s1600/Selanne+JOFA+Helmet+08.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
In his later years with Winnipeg, Selanne begins to wear a JOFA 366 with the black foam padding inside. Also, in these pictures, you can see that he is using a "half-on-half-off" half shield mount, where the top holes go through the front piece of the helmet, while the bottom screws are mounted below, into the back piece. I really think his "wings" are funny in these years; the CCM ear loops naturally want to flip out when installed.<br />

1996-2001 Mighty Ducks of Anaheim - NHL<br />
<br />
After being traded to the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, Selanne continues to wear a JOFA 366, now with the more familiar "366" bumper than has become synonymous with his image. He trades in the funny looking CCM ear loops for a more refined Cooper/Bauer ear loop. I'm guessing these purple JOFA 366 helmets were made just for him; it would make no sense for JOFA to normally produce such a color.<br />

2001-2003 San Jose Sharks - NHL<br />
<br />
After embarking on his experimental days playing for non-Anaheim teams; Selanne's first stop is a stone's throw away in San Jose. He keeps wearing his JOFA 366 bucket, now with new San Jose decals; but seems to remove the 1xcel decals from his half shield (could this be because of a sponsor issue?).<br />

2008<br />
<br />
Due to licensing restrictions that disallowed the JOFA brand to be displayed in the NHL; the NHL, and probably Reebok, force Selanne to choose between continuing to wear his JOFA 366 helmet, or trading it in for a modern helmet. Selanne decides to simply remove the ink from the JOFA logos on his helmet, and with out words tells Reebok, "**** you!".<br />

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
At the beginning of the 2011-2012 season, the NHL instates a new helmet number guideline, requiring players to wear their number on the front of their helmets, as well as the back. This apparently makes it easier for the officials and broadcasters to identify the players. I don't know if Selanne likes this change; considering he has not opted to change his helmet for his entire career!</div>

<br />
1993 NHL All-Star Game / Right: 2000 NHL All-Star Game<br />
<br />
It seems the All-Star Game is Selanne's favorite time to experiment with helmets! For his first NHL All-Star Game, Selanne wore an un-modified JOFA 366, with a 366 bumper (not faux leather), and surprisingly no trademark visor! (Right) Selanne wears a red JOFA 366 with All-Star decals and a 1xcel aviator half shield; it's hard to make out, but it looks like the bumper reads 390 - I wonder if he had this helmet modified!<br />

<br />
2003 NHL All-Star Game<br />
<br />
Now for a truly rare sight; Selanne wore a CCM HT852 helmet with an Oakley aviator half shield during the 2003 NHL All-Star Game! Traitor? Naw, I would guess there was some sort of endorsement by CCM that required him to give up his JOFA 366 for a night. (Right) Selanne warmed up during the 2007 NHL All-Star Game wearing a modern Reebok helmet and no visor. I believe he switched back to his JOFA during the actual game.<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Before the JOFA 390 was the JOFA 290. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The JOFA 290 is nearly identical to the JOFA 390. However, the front piece of the helmet differs, and was later re-designed to become what is the JOFA 390. The ear pieces differ slightly as well; as the JOFA 290 has a much skinnier cross bar.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;"></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="text-align: left;"><span style="text-align: left;"><br />

</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">These pictures show the JOFA 290 (red) next to a JOFA 390. Notice the difference in the ear pieces.<span style="text-align: center;"> </span> </div><br />

Not to be mistaken for the JOFA 298 (which I have previously), the 290's ear pieces are thinner than the 298, the plastic is not as hard, and the forehead padding is reduced to allow better airflow.<br />

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_wevwAl3tag/TzlwnjKjxHI/AAAAAAAAAI4/zjtC88WG9_8/s1600/JOFA+298+03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-_wevwAl3tag/TzlwnjKjxHI/AAAAAAAAAI4/zjtC88WG9_8/s640/JOFA+298+03.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The JOFA 298 Goalie helmet, worn by Tommy Soderstrom, was specifically made for goalies. The plastic is much harder than it's near identical player counterpart, the JOFA 290, to increase durability.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WsTzk5sUsf4/TzlxAq1atVI/AAAAAAAAAJg/raNx0N1lMAE/s1600/JOFA+298+06.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-WsTzk5sUsf4/TzlxAq1atVI/AAAAAAAAAJg/raNx0N1lMAE/s400/JOFA+298+06.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
A JOFA 278 cage, is attached, replicating Tommy Soderstrom's setup; complete with JOFA dangler placed high on the cage.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9itwdd_bqHw/TzlwyI3rOfI/AAAAAAAAAJA/BaQy2E_YQoU/s1600/JOFA+298+01.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-9itwdd_bqHw/TzlwyI3rOfI/AAAAAAAAAJA/BaQy2E_YQoU/s640/JOFA+298+01.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Piecing this helmet together was the result of buying two JOFA Goalie 298 helmets online. The other helmet was yellowed, and missing foam inside, but had the 278 cage. I took the cage that originally came with this helmet, removed the dangler, and swapped them.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OXGAhSZGqCU/Tzlw1YnEHXI/AAAAAAAAAJI/Mn8dBC_YxPA/s1600/JOFA+298+02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OXGAhSZGqCU/Tzlw1YnEHXI/AAAAAAAAAJI/Mn8dBC_YxPA/s640/JOFA+298+02.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The helmet is extremely comfortable, however, I was told it can get very warm when in use; the vents were later re-designed, which became the JOFA 390.<br />

<br />
Concluding my post, "Modifying The Reebok 3K L", here is the final result of my modification; an exact replica of Teemu Selanne's famous JOFA 366 lid with soft ear loops and Oakley straight visor, uniquely branded by Reebok.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Mu6CBmdUbpo/T8FAuE8PraI/AAAAAAAAAOE/Qzv6d_PCXSo/s1600/Reebok+3K+L+Mod+02.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Mu6CBmdUbpo/T8FAuE8PraI/AAAAAAAAAOE/Qzv6d_PCXSo/s640/Reebok+3K+L+Mod+02.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The helmet really turned out nice. Greg, who funded this project, was very pleased. He told me he will only be wearing the helmet during practice and stick time; worrying about those loose cannon players out there. I can't blame him, this helmet ain't cheap, and you most definitely can't replace it easily.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I really liked the labeling on this helmet. You might not be able to read it clearly, but the sticker at the top says, "Reebok - Powered By JOFA"; how cool. I'm glad Reebok is giving JOFA's original designers some credit. One strange thing about this helmet is that it is not certified by either HECC or CSA. I guess this is why this helmet is only sold in Europe.</div>

I sure hope Greg gets some attention with this helmet; it is sure to have hockey equipment aficionados perplexed. I guarantee there is not another player in the world rocking this lid; other than Selanne that is!</div>JOFA Helmet Prohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05034720011118883268noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2530971626343683072.post-8879084857576691152011-06-04T14:28:00.000-05:002011-06-04T14:28:26.710-05:00Modifying The Reebok 3K LRecently, one of my readers, Greg, commented on my post "Modifying The JOFA 390", suggesting that I modify his Reebok 3K L (large) for a fee. It sounded good to me; I thought it would give me the chance to check out the new Reebok version of the JOFA 390, while also co-creating a one of a kind helmet. Greg also asked me if I could take some process photos and send them to him, so I did. Anyways, I thought I'd share these photos with the world, giving you readers out there an idea of what the process looks like, as well as showcase Greg's new "Reebok 366K" helmet.<br />
<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The first step is disassembling the helmet. I kept the front part wrapped up to prevent scratches while separated. Notice the Reebok branding; Greg said he ordered this helmet from the UK, which made me kind of nervous doing this mod, as this model would not be easily replaced if I were to make a mistake.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Next, I drilled and pried out the rivets that hold the padding inside the helmet. The picture shows the parts side by side, with a little pile of broken rivets in the middle. Fortunately, I was able to remove the rivets with no problem, leaving the holes nice and clean without any "blowout".</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8WyZisrtTJQ/TeqAJsc08jI/AAAAAAAAAB0/gmEUMJFXolU/s1600/Reebok+3K+Mod+Step+02_3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-8WyZisrtTJQ/TeqAJsc08jI/AAAAAAAAAB0/gmEUMJFXolU/s640/Reebok+3K+Mod+Step+02_3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
This picture shows the bare part, ready for modification. By isolating this part of the helmet, it makes it much easier to handle and work on during the process. The front part is untouched, as it does not require modification.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mKMlR4cvJbE/TeqALx-8WII/AAAAAAAAAB4/4y0DHSMc8wA/s1600/Reebok+3K+Mod+Step+03.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mKMlR4cvJbE/TeqALx-8WII/AAAAAAAAAB4/4y0DHSMc8wA/s640/Reebok+3K+Mod+Step+03.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
Using painters tape as a drawing surface, I traced a template I made from an actual JOFA 366 on both sides of the helmet. This way, I can be sure that the sides are nice and symmetrical.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uVK82rbWJHY/TeqANxIJXiI/AAAAAAAAAB8/U4m1Ay3w0Jw/s1600/Reebok+3K+Mod+Step+03_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-uVK82rbWJHY/TeqANxIJXiI/AAAAAAAAAB8/U4m1Ay3w0Jw/s640/Reebok+3K+Mod+Step+03_1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
With the cut lines laid out, I then go ahead and cut along them with an X-ACTO knife. I remove the bottom half of the tape to indicate the area that is being removed; leaving the top half covered with tape to preserve a nice line to scribe across, while also serving as a layer of protection from handling and cutting.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZG-tJ_syv58/TeqAQMWK1DI/AAAAAAAAACA/ugCnzbOdmiY/s1600/Reebok+3K+Mod+Step+04.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ZG-tJ_syv58/TeqAQMWK1DI/AAAAAAAAACA/ugCnzbOdmiY/s640/Reebok+3K+Mod+Step+04.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
The next step is fully scribing and sanding the new ear contours, as shown above. Also shown is the removed ear protection laying next to the part.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-i6HGH4y9WLA/TeqASaCh6CI/AAAAAAAAACE/DBfPTDpJ2Rc/s1600/Reebok+3K+Mod+Step+04_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-i6HGH4y9WLA/TeqASaCh6CI/AAAAAAAAACE/DBfPTDpJ2Rc/s640/Reebok+3K+Mod+Step+04_1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
This picture shows the finished part after detail sanding; where all the rough edges have been sanded away, producing what is apparently the original manufactured part.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uiXvASckfHk/TeqAUmQbRtI/AAAAAAAAACI/2aP7iz813qY/s1600/Reebok+3K+Mod+Step+05.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-uiXvASckfHk/TeqAUmQbRtI/AAAAAAAAACI/2aP7iz813qY/s640/Reebok+3K+Mod+Step+05.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
The ear loops take a little modification as well. Here's a look at them before installation.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jrX32QnCHm4/Tep_-cba_cI/AAAAAAAAABg/F4HS8zE1t_Y/s1600/Reebok+3K+Mod+Step+06_1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jrX32QnCHm4/Tep_-cba_cI/AAAAAAAAABg/F4HS8zE1t_Y/s640/Reebok+3K+Mod+Step+06_1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
After rounding up the appropriate hardware, and trimming the padding to fit, I am then ready to finish the modification. This picture shows the helmet without a chinstrap because the picture was taken before I received the part. The only thing left to do is re-assemble the helmet, install the visor, and trim the chinstrap. Check out my next post for the final product. I'm really happy about the way this helmet turned out; and so was Greg!JOFA Helmet Prohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05034720011118883268noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2530971626343683072.post-73568864701313313872011-06-04T13:37:00.003-05:002011-06-04T13:44:16.823-05:00The JOFA 390 Jaromir Jagr Edition<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pIwXGRitYs0/TepxBIas7AI/AAAAAAAAABM/OYu9KrV3Cus/s1600/JOFA%2B390%2BJagr%2B03.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" height="640" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5614424149724032002" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pIwXGRitYs0/TepxBIas7AI/AAAAAAAAABM/OYu9KrV3Cus/s640/JOFA%2B390%2BJagr%2B03.jpg" style="display: block; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;" width="640" /></a><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">Following up on my previous post "Jaromir Jagr's JOFA Helmets", I decided to show some pictures of my JOFA 390 Jaromir Jagr Edition helmet. These pictures should give you a better look at Jagr's helmet, as it is difficult to get any high-resolution photographs of his old lid. This version of the JOFA 390 is an exact replica of the helmet Jagr wore during his best seasons in the NHL. <a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/JOFA-390-Jaromir-Jagr-Edition-Hockey-Helmet-HTF-NWOT-/190541149773?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c5d23364d#ht_500wt_1156">This helmet is currently up for bidding on eBay, shipping worldwide.</a><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-k1sGH9cyzjM/Tep1EsZN99I/AAAAAAAAABQ/4Le3-BlXML4/s1600/JOFA+390+Jagr+10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-k1sGH9cyzjM/Tep1EsZN99I/AAAAAAAAABQ/4Le3-BlXML4/s640/JOFA+390+Jagr+10.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
Notice in this close up the visor mounts. I installed the visor pro spec, where the visor is bolted on both sides. The stock visors swing up and is held down with snap straps and J-hooks; similar to a full cage. The visor is an Itech HLC Deluxe, a beefed up version of the old HLC. Although it is not the same exact model that Jagr used, I think it's better; the logo has Penguin's gold lettering on black, and of course, the visor is brand new. It's virtually impossible to find a brand new Itech 3 point visor without modern Bauer branding. The installment on this visor was a very difficult project; I found the only way to mount it securely is to remove the front part of the helmet, install the visor, and then re-assemble the helmet.<br />

Another thing that makes this helmet unique is its condition; this is the only new, old logo branded JOFA 390 I have ever come across. I'm happy to have found one in this condition, but I feel obliged to sell it; I'll let someone else go scuff it up!</div>JOFA Helmet Prohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05034720011118883268noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2530971626343683072.post-75013491242349149552011-05-06T19:41:00.000-05:002011-05-06T19:41:43.070-05:00The JOFA 666 Pro Custom<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GjYrZRFI2cA/TcSMhOEDpfI/AAAAAAAAAII/I7VT64sdBG0/s1600/JOFA+366+custom.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GjYrZRFI2cA/TcSMhOEDpfI/AAAAAAAAAII/I7VT64sdBG0/s640/JOFA+366+custom.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
Behold, the JOFA 666; a custom modified JOFA 390 from my collection. The reason I have named this the JOFA 666 is because this mod is an evolution of the JOFA 366, and because this is a "Beast" of a helmet!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iTkRNvA9LPg/TcSN_yAQTjI/AAAAAAAAAIU/Kshvvlw1J98/s1600/JOFA+366+custom+front.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-iTkRNvA9LPg/TcSN_yAQTjI/AAAAAAAAAIU/Kshvvlw1J98/s640/JOFA+366+custom+front.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
What makes the JOFA 666 special, aside from the tinted Oakley pro modified visor install and its mint condition, is the evolved ear loops. This custom install of pro ear loops, common on most helmets, makes the JOFA 666 the most comfortable JOFA helmet since the JOFA 235.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iRg6SBGxD3E/TcSOK6TaCsI/AAAAAAAAAIY/qiGZUshWp1M/s1600/JOFA+366+custom+back.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iRg6SBGxD3E/TcSOK6TaCsI/AAAAAAAAAIY/qiGZUshWp1M/s640/JOFA+366+custom+back.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
Someday, I may sell this helmet. It would be incredible if Selanne or Jagr were to actually buy it from me! Enjoy the photos, these are the only pictures ever taken of this helmet.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2530971626343683072.post-55254988139777220112011-05-06T15:50:00.007-05:002012-05-25T14:43:55.071-05:00Modifying The JOFA 390<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-e-JFHINXn14/TcQqbNql7eI/AAAAAAAAAHs/xDY3CDJ4JnQ/s1600/JOFA+390+vs+366.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="311" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-e-JFHINXn14/TcQqbNql7eI/AAAAAAAAAHs/xDY3CDJ4JnQ/s640/JOFA+390+vs+366.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
With some patience, skill, and craftsmanship, it is possible to modify a JOFA 390 helmet (above, left) to replicate the pro ear loops like that of the JOFA 366 (above, right); the result is a much more comfortable, pro style, JOFA helmet. The modification also voids the JOFA 390's HECC and CSA certification, especially when done incorrectly; so unless you are a professional, or playing men's league, do not waste your time and money removing the ear protection from your JOFA 390 helmet.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JpsC33V-TFs/TcScq2djq2I/AAAAAAAAAIc/wAXXonNfaUo/s1600/JOFA+mod+tools.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="324" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-JpsC33V-TFs/TcScq2djq2I/AAAAAAAAAIc/wAXXonNfaUo/s640/JOFA+mod+tools.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The first step in modifying your JOFA 390 is gathering the tools and parts for the job. These tools include: medium Phillips and flathead screw drivers, a handheld power drill, a 1/8" drill bit, a 7/32" drill bit, small nose pliers, strong kitchen or shop scissors, an X-ACTO knife, a box knife, extra blades for both knives, painters tape (masking tape will also work), a pencil, a thin or medium Sharpie marker, a metal straight edge ruler (smaller the better), medium and fine grit sand paper, a sand paper block, and a cigarette lighter. In addition, a Dremel (small, hand-held rotary power tool) with a rotary sanding bit and refills can also be helpful; but is not necessary. Most of these tools can be found at a local hardware store.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-osRvRdZ-mnQ/TcROSczbnhI/AAAAAAAAAH4/IuAnY2GqRTc/s1600/helmet+parts.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-osRvRdZ-mnQ/TcROSczbnhI/AAAAAAAAAH4/IuAnY2GqRTc/s640/helmet+parts.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
You also will need some helmet parts, including: a pair of ear loops (I recommend Bauer), two short helmet screws, two cage snap/dome screws, 4 wide/short backings (or medium/short backings with washers), and a chin strap (two parts with plastic snap). These parts can be found online at various hockey equipment retailers; they may also be available at your local hockey shop, saving you the price of shipping and handling, while also supporting your local shop.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ve9V1Z1OX60/TcQqgJT6Y3I/AAAAAAAAAHw/CURZJI1VF2U/s1600/JOFA+390+cut+lines.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="639" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Ve9V1Z1OX60/TcQqgJT6Y3I/AAAAAAAAAHw/CURZJI1VF2U/s640/JOFA+390+cut+lines.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="text-align: left;">Next, disassemble your JOFA 390; removing the front piece, making sure to collect all the screws and backings and set them aside. It is also advised to first remove the cage, if applicable. </span><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Once the back piece is isolated, drill out the rivets on either side of the ear protection using a 1/8" bit, making sure not to damage the helmet; the pliers may be used to break the rivets and pull them out. Now, the foam padding should be loose, set that aside until later; cleaning the helmet padding while removed is recommended. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Use the template I have provided to scribe out the ear protection using an X-ACTO or box knife with a sharp blade; be patient, it is easy to mess this step up. The best way to mark the cut lines (indicated above in red), as well as protect the helmet from scratches and cuts, is to apply the painter's tape over the ear protection, and draw the cut lines with a pencil - later refining them with a Sharpie marker, on top of the tape. I like to use my shop scissors to cut the bottom half off first; be sure to work your way to the edge, as you can not replace removed material. After you are close to your template lines, sand the inner edge making sure not to scuff the helmet; straight lines can be achieved by using a sanding block. Repeat this process on the other side, trying to mirror the first side as close as possible.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9J5zUgzOD-0/TcRwuhEIzJI/AAAAAAAAAIA/bFrsOaFsGok/s1600/JOFA+366+mod+inside.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9J5zUgzOD-0/TcRwuhEIzJI/AAAAAAAAAIA/bFrsOaFsGok/s400/JOFA+366+mod+inside.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Once satisfied, remove the tape, and trim the padding to match the new profile using scissors and a box knife; use sand paper to smooth. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
To prepare the ear loops, match the center of the flat rubber to the center of the hole, one side at a time; adjust them so the flair transition on the ear loops just touches the bottom of the helmet, then mark the ear loop with a Sharpie. Once marked, find center, and drill through the ear loop using the 7/32" bit; then cut off extra material, leaving a uniform material thickness on all sides. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Finally, use the specified hardware to re-assemble the back piece, sandwiching the ear loops between the foam and the plastic. Make sure you add the chinstrap to the ear loops before assembly. Use the cage snap/dome screws on the back holes and the regular screws at the front; large backings should hold the foam in place. Now, put your helmet back together, replacing the front piece using the hardware that you set aside. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-yHkqxnZqD9I/TcRbyf43LTI/AAAAAAAAAH8/Eza77slndGs/s1600/Selanne+Smile.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="310" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-yHkqxnZqD9I/TcRbyf43LTI/AAAAAAAAAH8/Eza77slndGs/s640/Selanne+Smile.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The result should look nearly identical to Selanne's JOFA 366 helmet with soft ear loops. Replication of the standard JOFA 366 is next to impossible due to the plastic ear loops, and the need for snap rivets through them. Hope this helps you JOFA fans out there who have wanted a Selanne-style JOFA 366. Just remember, take your time, use photo references if unsure, and be safe using the knives (make sure to push away from yourself).<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-m6UerUwAXZk/TcRw_z3ADxI/AAAAAAAAAIE/9nzwiAW2s9U/s1600/Selanne+JOFA+366+ducks+mod.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-m6UerUwAXZk/TcRw_z3ADxI/AAAAAAAAAIE/9nzwiAW2s9U/s640/Selanne+JOFA+366+ducks+mod.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
This is my first modified JOFA 390. I used photo references for this mod; I wish I had better photos at the time, because I over-cut it slightly at the top of the ear; otherwise it is just about spot on. I also mounted an Oakley straight visor, just like Selanne's, and added official NHL helmet decals to complete the look. Selanne has his side logos rubbed off, and his Ducks decal is placed higher on the helmet, over the divide; I didn't want to mess with that, so I just placed the Ducks decals over the ears. Due to my large cranium, and because I want my helmet to fit me, I mounted the visor further forward than Selanne's to allow air flow to prevent fogging. I will show how to correctly mount visors on the JOFA 390 on another post.</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2530971626343683072.post-33156862260523311362011-05-06T00:47:00.001-05:002011-05-06T00:56:41.660-05:00The JOFA 390<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-i5O2kEsQo2I/TcNn0PIPLCI/AAAAAAAAAGY/j3vBX42T4Ik/s1600/JOFA+390.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-i5O2kEsQo2I/TcNn0PIPLCI/AAAAAAAAAGY/j3vBX42T4Ik/s1600/JOFA+390.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The JOFA 390 is the most widely known and available JOFA helmet ever made. It was first manufactured in the early 1990's, as a redesign of the JOFA 280; sculpting a new, rounder, front piece, with aerodynamic intakes. I have mentioned this helmet before; the JOFA 390 has ear protection, molded into the back piece of the helmet, differentiating it from the JOFA 366 pro model. This design makes it quicker and easier to manufacture; research suggests that JOFA produced this helmet more than any other model. The helmet was most commonly sold with a JOFA 381 cage like the photo above.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_eOVDSafogQ/TcNpEW6K04I/AAAAAAAAAGw/wcr1MqOjux0/s1600/jaromir-jagr.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_eOVDSafogQ/TcNpEW6K04I/AAAAAAAAAGw/wcr1MqOjux0/s640/jaromir-jagr.jpg" width="532" /></a></div><br />
NHL Pros, such as Jaromir Jagr made this helmet extremely popular during the 1990's. Many of you may have worn a JOFA helmet when you were little during this time; chances are that helmet was a JOFA 395 (size 6-1/2 - 7-1/4), which is the junior version of the JOFA 390, sold exclusively with ear protection and a JOFA 386 junior cage.<br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Mats Sundin, the highest scoring Swedish player in the history of the NHL, is another pro who wore the JOFA 390 helmet during his professional career. He wore the JOFA 390 while he played for the Quebec Nordiques from 1990-94, as well as his early years playing for the Swedish National Team.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cLoJjO6nuxs/TcNo2963XVI/AAAAAAAAAGo/VGwGRSWnpWY/s1600/article_37340_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-cLoJjO6nuxs/TcNo2963XVI/AAAAAAAAAGo/VGwGRSWnpWY/s1600/article_37340_2.jpg" /></a></div><br />
The JOFA 390 was also worn by Peter Forsberg during the early 1990's, during his play for Team Sweden as illustrated. I believe he wore a JOFA 390 on and off throughout his early career, switching it out with a JOFA 366, which is most definitely the more comfortable and exclusive of the two helmets.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kozoeLjVosg/TcNo7sXNm_I/AAAAAAAAAGs/xxum1sMS-jI/s1600/1992UpperDeck235.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-kozoeLjVosg/TcNo7sXNm_I/AAAAAAAAAGs/xxum1sMS-jI/s320/1992UpperDeck235.jpg" width="264" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QQXUjfmY-Mw/TcOBBSO-kGI/AAAAAAAAAHM/CqCr8PIH6vE/s1600/JOFA+998.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="243" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QQXUjfmY-Mw/TcOBBSO-kGI/AAAAAAAAAHM/CqCr8PIH6vE/s320/JOFA+998.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div>Here is Forsberg wearing a JOFA 390 helmet with what is likely a JOFA 998 visor/cage combo (right); this must have been extremely early in his career to have worn a full face mask.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UTC_jezmmz8/TcOGStQAWSI/AAAAAAAAAHQ/Bbs7kCiWGcc/s1600/koivu+rookie+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-UTC_jezmmz8/TcOGStQAWSI/AAAAAAAAAHQ/Bbs7kCiWGcc/s640/koivu+rookie+2.jpg" width="389" /></a></div><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Saku Koivu is another NHL star who wore a JOFA 390, however, he did not wear one in the NHL; only in his early Finnish SM-Liiga and Olympic and World Championship play with Team Finland in the early 1990's.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xE-zZSlafag/TcOI5-vjr7I/AAAAAAAAAHU/73LE79cHgsI/s1600/New+JOFA+390+-+RBK+3K.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="410" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xE-zZSlafag/TcOI5-vjr7I/AAAAAAAAAHU/73LE79cHgsI/s640/New+JOFA+390+-+RBK+3K.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">In recent years, JOFA has changed their logo, somewhat modernizing it (left), and continued producting the JOFA 390 model well into the 2000's; until they were bought by RBK/Reebok Hockey in 2004. Reebok continues to manufacture this model (right), replacing the JOFA graphics and removing the front bumper displaying "390"; appropriate, since they now call this model the RBK 3K. Unfortunately, the RBK 3K is currently only being sold over seas; probably as not to conflict with Reebok's marketing of their new line of helmets, worn by many pros today, notably Sidney Crosby, Pavel Datsyuk, and The Sedin Brothers.</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2530971626343683072.post-50139352385584732472011-05-05T14:10:00.005-05:002012-02-13T16:43:41.820-06:00The JOFA 290 / 298<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">After discussing Denis Savard's JOFA 266 helmet, I found it appropriate to follow up with an overview of the JOFA 290. This helmet emerged after the JOFA 280, and was worn nearly exclusively by European players. You may tell from the photos, the JOFA 290 was a popular choice amongst international competition, especially Scandinavian teams, during the early 1990's. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qoyOVJEGas8/TcI6Y-3dI2I/AAAAAAAAAEM/7Y-KIwTJYqA/s1600/selanne+rookie+jofa+290.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qoyOVJEGas8/TcI6Y-3dI2I/AAAAAAAAAEM/7Y-KIwTJYqA/s640/selanne+rookie+jofa+290.jpg" width="467" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Notice above that Selanne's helmet has a different front piece than that of his famous JOFA 366 (JOFA 390 without ear protection), where the JOFA 290 has an "Armadillo" pattern on his forehead rather than the styled intakes of the later produced JOFA 366/390.</div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0cSJqsQkYzM/TcI7zdOuWPI/AAAAAAAAAEU/86q_51mplFA/s1600/JOFA+290+Lidstrom_Niklas.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="461" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-0cSJqsQkYzM/TcI7zdOuWPI/AAAAAAAAAEU/86q_51mplFA/s640/JOFA+290+Lidstrom_Niklas.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kfV0jvu9_2A/TcI8OhD51qI/AAAAAAAAAEY/KRgi0cWZDKQ/s1600/lidstrom+JOFA+290.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="313" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kfV0jvu9_2A/TcI8OhD51qI/AAAAAAAAAEY/KRgi0cWZDKQ/s320/lidstrom+JOFA+290.jpg" width="320" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7nmcn9dG5Mw/TcI6kGcKEAI/AAAAAAAAAEQ/CYaGQWko468/s1600/sundin+jofa+290.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7nmcn9dG5Mw/TcI6kGcKEAI/AAAAAAAAAEQ/CYaGQWko468/s320/sundin+jofa+290.jpg" width="249" /></a></div><br />
Here we have the JOFA 290 being worn by Niklas Lidstrom playing for Team Sweden, and Mats Sundin playing for Djurgårdens IF(black and white), early in their careers around 1990-92.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QbDRRpCtIA4/TcLmi_syu6I/AAAAAAAAAEg/H-JjQDGAW-8/s1600/JFM995.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-QbDRRpCtIA4/TcLmi_syu6I/AAAAAAAAAEg/H-JjQDGAW-8/s1600/JFM995.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The visor that Selanne, Lidstrom, and Sundin are using is the JOFA 995 visor. As I made note of this before, the JOFA 995 is the only visor that fits the JOFA 290-390 helmets without modification including the addition of custom mounting points.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bV7sWihzsKg/TcI5ZRG8eNI/AAAAAAAAAEE/vnG1XH6fZRg/s1600/jofa+290.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-bV7sWihzsKg/TcI5ZRG8eNI/AAAAAAAAAEE/vnG1XH6fZRg/s400/jofa+290.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The blue JOFA 290 helmet above is outfitted with a JOFA 267 cage, which was specifically designed for goaltenders. This image also reveals the sizing specifications, 290SR 6-3/4 - 7-3/8, which is identical to that of the JOFA 390 helmet.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AqYwJE3Xql0/TcLwkOCaCrI/AAAAAAAAAEo/3XMb4ZySEIk/s1600/6259601_440x326.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="237" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-AqYwJE3Xql0/TcLwkOCaCrI/AAAAAAAAAEo/3XMb4ZySEIk/s320/6259601_440x326.jpg" width="320" /></a><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tWzfSQZcar8/TcI8QEts8XI/AAAAAAAAAEc/7dg2L9zYi4Y/s1600/Tommy+Soderstrom+of+the+New+York+Islanders.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tWzfSQZcar8/TcI8QEts8XI/AAAAAAAAAEc/7dg2L9zYi4Y/s200/Tommy+Soderstrom+of+the+New+York+Islanders.jpg" width="200" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Tommy Soderstrom, one of the finest goaltenders to come out of Sweden, wore this JOFA 298/267 combo during most of his career. Notice the photo of him playing for the Flyers looks as though he has stretched the cage out at the sides. I have not yet found a skater that has worn the JOFA 298 in the NHL; it seems that, given the choice, the pros preferred the JOFA 366 and 390 helmets.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-p-392OleDTk/TcL9mQ1CWqI/AAAAAAAAAFA/i3iDQK1dIFM/s1600/Tommy+Soderstrom+Flyers+JOFA+290.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-p-392OleDTk/TcL9mQ1CWqI/AAAAAAAAAFA/i3iDQK1dIFM/s1600/Tommy+Soderstrom+Flyers+JOFA+290.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div>Above is a Tommy Soderstrom's JOFA 298 with a JOFA 275 cage that he wore while playing with the Philadelphia Flyers. I will assume this particular helmet was worn early in his career considering his use of the JOFA 267 cage later on.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Hkz0wmG23oA/TcI5qCSu08I/AAAAAAAAAEI/n56PSKNfvvc/s1600/casque-rbk-315-jr.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Hkz0wmG23oA/TcI5qCSu08I/AAAAAAAAAEI/n56PSKNfvvc/s400/casque-rbk-315-jr.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Today, the JOFA 290 is still being sold, well kinda. Reebok manufactures a junior helmet sharing styling traits with the JOFA 290, sold in Europe as the Reebok 1K. Notice that the foam padding looks like styrene with mesh padding adhered to it, not the same as JOFA's traditional dual density, soft foam padding found in nearly all their helmets. </div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2530971626343683072.post-51251447440079134612011-05-03T20:35:00.006-05:002011-05-05T19:47:36.261-05:00Denis Savard's JOFA Helmets<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_q_2iE3ILnk/TcMUfZnjFII/AAAAAAAAAFk/9HseDQMU8uo/s1600/JOFA+266+denis+savard+canadiens.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-_q_2iE3ILnk/TcMUfZnjFII/AAAAAAAAAFk/9HseDQMU8uo/s1600/JOFA+266+denis+savard+canadiens.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

On Savard's retrun to the Chicago Blackhawks, he continued using the JOFA 366. As the more recent photos show (below), his new JOFA 366 helmets have the "366" bumper on his forehead instead of the faux leather tab.<br />

I have not yet discussed the use of JOFA helmets by goaltenders, so I figured Arturs Irbe would be an appropriate candidate to begin with, also because of his career long use of the JOFA 280 helmet. He has a following too. There are many forums and blogs written by goaltenders who are huge fans of Irbe and his helmet, as well as goaltenders who prefer using JOFA helmets for protection rather than the modern goalie mask.<br />

</div>This helmet was produced after the JOFA 235, but before the JOFA 290 (which I will later discuss). It was an injection molded, one piece helmet like the JOFA 235, but shares a similarity to JOFA models later produced.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YQuGiq55MDI/TcCIHbiHktI/AAAAAAAAADM/I4p8mmDaL40/s1600/Christian+Ruuttu.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="385" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-YQuGiq55MDI/TcCIHbiHktI/AAAAAAAAADM/I4p8mmDaL40/s640/Christian+Ruuttu.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The only star player I know of who wore a JOFA 280 is Christian Ruuttu, during his seasons with the Buffalo Sabres during the late 1980's and early 1990's. As you may guess by looking at this photo, the JOFA 280 helmet was not exactly a hit with players as much as other JOFA helmets, probably due to the helmet's lack of sculptural refinement and odd proportions. However its significance is that it was an important step in the development and design of the JOFA 290 helmet, and later the JOFA 390 helmet; most notably the addition of ear protection, integrated as a single injection molded part.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-w2ckkaAJppI/TcCJt4_ATUI/AAAAAAAAADQ/QHqSMwBusCA/s1600/giant+jofa+280.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-w2ckkaAJppI/TcCJt4_ATUI/AAAAAAAAADQ/QHqSMwBusCA/s1600/giant+jofa+280.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Here is a giant JOFA 280 helmet that is, or was, on the rooftop of the Malung, Sweden JOFA factory. Apparently this helmet is of much significance to JOFA, as I have not seen any other JOFA models being produced at this enormous scale.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lK2wEAV0DYE/TcNKn5lei_I/AAAAAAAAAGU/6-ZiyQnOGLY/s1600/JOFA+Protects+Gretzky.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lK2wEAV0DYE/TcNKn5lei_I/AAAAAAAAAGU/6-ZiyQnOGLY/s1600/JOFA+Protects+Gretzky.jpg" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IZ_gSxL1-YY/TcNJHpP0reI/AAAAAAAAAGQ/70FZXUPw_4g/s1600/Jofa+Gretzky+Ad.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-IZ_gSxL1-YY/TcNJHpP0reI/AAAAAAAAAGQ/70FZXUPw_4g/s1600/Jofa+Gretzky+Ad.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">These JOFA ads show a young Wayne Gretzky modeling the JOFA 280 helmet. This helmet must have marked an important point in JOFA's growth as a business, as mainstream advertising of their products was not common.</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2530971626343683072.post-41316428278236620642011-05-03T15:42:00.003-05:002011-05-05T19:43:07.158-05:00Jaromir Jagr's JOFA Helmets<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DAveoEKBnb0/TcBiaA9XJWI/AAAAAAAAACc/bKoELQhVMZw/s1600/68-jaromir-jagr-005770964.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="534" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DAveoEKBnb0/TcBiaA9XJWI/AAAAAAAAACc/bKoELQhVMZw/s640/68-jaromir-jagr-005770964.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
Another NHL superstar, and Mario Lemieux's old line mate, who wore a JOFA helmet is Jaromir Jagr. He wore the JOFA 390 helmet, the common model that was sold readily to the mainstream crowd. Instead of having a visor like Selanne's with mounting points on the sides only, Jagr wore an Itech 3 point visor, where additional security was added at the forehead mounting points for a cage. I'm not sure why Jagr preferred the JOFA 390, even though he most likely could have worn a JOFA 366, but he definitely influenced this helmet's popularity throughout the 1990's.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-D03uwYi7Hc8/TcBlSQS1BgI/AAAAAAAAACo/XwyQS7VO3uM/s400/200034820.jpg" width="400" /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jfwIco589TQ/TcBpSYB5bRI/AAAAAAAAAC0/bVcf5l8rYBk/s1600/jagr.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-jfwIco589TQ/TcBpSYB5bRI/AAAAAAAAAC0/bVcf5l8rYBk/s200/jagr.jpg" width="129" /></a><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BkUOC7qv04A/TcBpW66nU4I/AAAAAAAAAC4/WIJT5vY2YMk/s1600/JaromirJagr8806.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-BkUOC7qv04A/TcBpW66nU4I/AAAAAAAAAC4/WIJT5vY2YMk/s200/JaromirJagr8806.jpg" width="199" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Later in his career, he began to wear the JOFA 690 helmet. I'm guessing he started wearing this helmet around the time it was first produced, as one of JOFA's spokespersons to increase sales.</div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wpBXjWHdlg4/TcBmfIr4C1I/AAAAAAAAACs/GmybhWP-Ero/s1600/682723.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wpBXjWHdlg4/TcBmfIr4C1I/AAAAAAAAACs/GmybhWP-Ero/s1600/682723.jpg" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Since Jagr's retirement from the NHL, he has been wearing a "Gretzky" JOFA 235, with an Oakley Pro Modified visor. I suppose he doesn't feel at all intimidated in the Czech leagues, because this helmet is definitely a safety downgrade. </div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rjQEcnIu7t8/TcBnYiGfA_I/AAAAAAAAACw/ookd3fQHH0U/s1600/jaromir-jagr-i-would-like-to-stay-in-omsk-167.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rjQEcnIu7t8/TcBnYiGfA_I/AAAAAAAAACw/ookd3fQHH0U/s400/jaromir-jagr-i-would-like-to-stay-in-omsk-167.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div style="text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div style="text-align: left;">Looks super comfortable; the JOFA 235 is an ultra light helmet to begin with, designed to minimize the sensation of actually wearing a helmet. I'm sure the visor weighs it down a little bit, it seems Jagr is practically using the helmet as a device to hold eye protection in place. Interesting look, wonder if he got this idea from Jari Kurri (previous post)?</div><div style="text-align: left;"></div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2530971626343683072.post-71292246295934417712011-05-03T15:01:00.005-05:002011-05-07T12:42:44.983-05:00The JOFA 235 51<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-L2asZ9KifDw/TcBZp5MhhkI/AAAAAAAAACI/HfNb2iQVX9I/s1600/035.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="544" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-L2asZ9KifDw/TcBZp5MhhkI/AAAAAAAAACI/HfNb2iQVX9I/s640/035.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">If the credit of JOFA's popularity was given to one person, it is "The Great One", Wayne Gretzky. He wore a JOFA 235 helmet, an evolution of Jonsson's original VM helmet, throughout his entire career. This helmet did not provide nearly as much protection as the JOFA 366/390 helmets, but it definitely stood out in the same way on the ice; as a symbol of a high-scoring hockey machine.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-O650Auh4Cto/TcMD8O8-Y4I/AAAAAAAAAFM/M0Stnwr2mUM/s1600/gretzky+autograph.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="353" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-O650Auh4Cto/TcMD8O8-Y4I/AAAAAAAAAFM/M0Stnwr2mUM/s400/gretzky+autograph.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Here's another look at the JOFA 235, this helmet signed by The Great One himself. Below shows the inside of a JOFA 235 used by Gretzky during his years with the Edmonton Oilers. The original JOFA 235's had minimal padding, similar to that of the original JOFA VM helmet; it was not until later that JOFA used their trademark dual density, heat molded, foam padding.<br />
<br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sBT0CgOpUeE/TcMEk6ivmUI/AAAAAAAAAFU/Z4fRT1damlM/s1600/inside+JOFA+235.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="305" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-sBT0CgOpUeE/TcMEk6ivmUI/AAAAAAAAAFU/Z4fRT1damlM/s400/inside+JOFA+235.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Surprisingly enough, Gretzky did not receive any notable head injuries during his career regardless of his flimsy head gear. This helmet has no known HECC or CSA certification, and it is no surprise. </div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6BYjZ7OkCns/TcBcYhB5eaI/AAAAAAAAACU/hHfKYHOd4cM/s1600/6276935_440x326.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="296" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-6BYjZ7OkCns/TcBcYhB5eaI/AAAAAAAAACU/hHfKYHOd4cM/s400/6276935_440x326.jpg" width="400" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wWpdVSmB2rM/TcMCb3yQBwI/AAAAAAAAAFI/aTi7edOCq04/s1600/teemu+selanne+jofa+235.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wWpdVSmB2rM/TcMCb3yQBwI/AAAAAAAAAFI/aTi7edOCq04/s320/teemu+selanne+jofa+235.jpg" width="179" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Gretzky was not the only one to wear this helmet, it was very popular amongst players throughout the 1980's. His star right wing, Jari Kurri, also sported the JOFA 235; except Kurri wore a visor, possibly influencing Selanne in his style of head gear later on. On the right is a rare photo of young Selanne playing for Team Finland; wearing a JOFA 235 just like his senior, Kurri, although Selanne is instead wearing what seems to be a JOFA 995 visor.</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JjOX4Rj_20Y/TcBd0XpcKnI/AAAAAAAAACY/EJdyLzPZSxE/s1600/gretzky+and+kurri.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-JjOX4Rj_20Y/TcBd0XpcKnI/AAAAAAAAACY/EJdyLzPZSxE/s400/gretzky+and+kurri.jpg" width="290" /></a></div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Gretzky and Kurri are possibly the the most dominant scoring force in NHL history. The scoring records they created during their play with the Edmonton Oilers may never be surpassed. So here's to the JOFA 235, the helmet that protected some of the greatest hockey minds to ever play the game.</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com16tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2530971626343683072.post-9807044618261588662011-05-03T14:28:00.002-05:002011-05-05T19:50:27.637-05:00Mario Lemieux's JOFA 66<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RiaMYbTw-48/TcBSdwopWoI/AAAAAAAAAB8/g5_oeEN-DHI/s1600/source_358_66957.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="576" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-RiaMYbTw-48/TcBSdwopWoI/AAAAAAAAAB8/g5_oeEN-DHI/s640/source_358_66957.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Undeniably one of the greatest players to ever play the game, Mario Lemieux wore a JOFA 366 helmet during the best seasons of his career; sharing credit for making the JOFA 366 a hockey icon. However, there is a twist. He would scratch the "3" off of the "366" bumper to make the helmet his own number, "66". </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZT2l2bqRKUA/TcBTfiTCqtI/AAAAAAAAACA/PTr2_1rgx80/s1600/source_358_66959.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZT2l2bqRKUA/TcBTfiTCqtI/AAAAAAAAACA/PTr2_1rgx80/s640/source_358_66959.jpg" width="488" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Pretty clever. Also interesting, is that the chin strap has snaps at both sides, resulting in a pivoting chinstrap which increases the helmet's fit and comfort, while also allowing complete removal of the chin strap during practices. I found these photos at <a href="http://www.classicauctions.net/">Classic Auctions</a>, which auctions off lots of rare sports equipment, and also provides great pictures of JOFA helmets worn by the pros.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1xxuQ0n50rw/TcBVhFJsDbI/AAAAAAAAACE/BnM1wJphxMk/s1600/72523172.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="384" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1xxuQ0n50rw/TcBVhFJsDbI/AAAAAAAAACE/BnM1wJphxMk/s640/72523172.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Here's a picture of Lemieux wearing his home helmet. Notice his KOHO gloves and stick from his KOHO Revolution line of equipment. What a throwback; the first stick I ever owned was a KOHO Revolution! I will discuss the relevance of KOHO amongst pros who wore JOFA helmets, and KOHO's relationship to JOFA in another post.</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2530971626343683072.post-22334274343726008892011-05-03T13:52:00.004-05:002011-05-19T11:50:30.567-05:00The JOFA 397<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5YNeC1XYa78/TcBFpbIb1ZI/AAAAAAAAABo/qnNk6LYJraY/s1600/JOFA397.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5YNeC1XYa78/TcBFpbIb1ZI/AAAAAAAAABo/qnNk6LYJraY/s640/JOFA397.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />The JOFA 397 seems to be a hybrid of the JOFA 390 and the JOFA 366. There is virtually no information about this model helmet. Notice the partial ear protection combined with the ear loops from the JOFA 366. I have not seen these being sold anywhere, it could have been sold exclusively in Europe.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jeSmYTJ0IQU/TcBGUaSZ2oI/AAAAAAAAABs/VKxBg9bVPF4/s1600/Suomi+Jofa+397.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jeSmYTJ0IQU/TcBGUaSZ2oI/AAAAAAAAABs/VKxBg9bVPF4/s1600/Suomi+Jofa+397.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>I became curious about this helmet after seeing Teemu Selanne wearing a "397" on his Team Finland helmet during the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. The helmet Selanne wore is definitely not like the red JOFA 397 shown a the top. Also, Selanne's helmet seems to have different ear loops than all his previous JOFA 366 helmets; they look like they are installed through slots like other hockey helmets, not via rivets like his JOFA 366's he wore with the Jets and the Ducks.<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HODeAOVssLE/TcBIeAnMxhI/AAAAAAAAABw/-ZEhQCwUS-U/s1600/Selanne+Jofa+397.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HODeAOVssLE/TcBIeAnMxhI/AAAAAAAAABw/-ZEhQCwUS-U/s640/Selanne+Jofa+397.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div>From this angle, you can tell that the ear loops are definitely different than his other helmets. It also looks as though Selanne resorted back to his horizontal visor mounting he used early in his career. I wonder if this particular helmet was made custom for Selanne, and could he have simply thrown an old "397" bumper on his newly modified helmet to confuse officials?<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-w9w57dTa7FY/TcBJmuSaUII/AAAAAAAAAB0/SuLUP-U6Fi8/s1600/TeemuSelanne2010WinterOlympics.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-w9w57dTa7FY/TcBJmuSaUII/AAAAAAAAAB0/SuLUP-U6Fi8/s640/TeemuSelanne2010WinterOlympics.jpg" width="426" /></a></div><br />In this photo, when Selanne broke his jaw during the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, he is wearing the same ear loops as his JOFA 397, however it looks as though he replaced the front piece of the helmet with a new Rbk one. I would assume the horizontal mounting of the visor interfered with the addition of jaw protection. You can see he removed the front bumper, or the entire front piece of the helmet, which probably displayed a "390", as the JOFA 390 is the only model of this style helmet still produced by Rbk which he could readily obtain.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GllL3U26tfo/TcL-8dlz3QI/AAAAAAAAAFE/rkKVZK_jrtc/s1600/Jonsson_Jorgen.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-GllL3U26tfo/TcL-8dlz3QI/AAAAAAAAAFE/rkKVZK_jrtc/s1600/Jonsson_Jorgen.jpg" /></a></div><br />This obscure photo of Jorgen Jonsson, playing for Färjestads BK of Sweden's Elitserien, shows him wearing what also seems to be a JOFA 397. The helmet he is wearing looks as though it was custom made, as the ear loops and logos are yellow (the stock color is white). You can tell it is a JOFA 397 because of the half ear protection in contrast to the yellow ear loops.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2530971626343683072.post-17949672130097471142011-05-03T01:19:00.012-05:002011-05-06T02:01:01.084-05:00The JOFA 366<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1DeHFgsiOJg/TcMtsnM2PuI/AAAAAAAAAF8/FwNp71x9JcU/s1600/JOFA+366+bw+copy.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="637" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1DeHFgsiOJg/TcMtsnM2PuI/AAAAAAAAAF8/FwNp71x9JcU/s640/JOFA+366+bw+copy.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
The JOFA 366 helmet is the pro stock model of the JOFA 390 helmet, worn most notably by Mario Lemieux, Teemu Selanne, Denis Savard, Theo Fleury, Phil Housley, Pat Verbeek, Vincent Damphousse, and Alexandre Daigle. The difference is subtle, but it makes a huge difference in the helmet's look as well as comfort. If you haven't already noticed, the ear protection is absent. This may have been a suggestion from Mario Lemieux to JOFA's designers, or could have it been a coincidence that it was dubbed the JOFA 3"66" - Mario Lemieux's number? This removal of the solid ear protection found in the Jofa 390 replaced with ear loops turns what used to be a bowling ball into a sports car of a helmet.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fmOy1n7_RpQ/TcObuaBkcxI/AAAAAAAAAHc/A7W3oMXsX0g/s1600/JOFA+Ferrari+Enzo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="359" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-fmOy1n7_RpQ/TcObuaBkcxI/AAAAAAAAAHc/A7W3oMXsX0g/s640/JOFA+Ferrari+Enzo.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br />
The sculpted intakes mimic that of a Ferrari or some other exotic car; and these helmets are just about as rare too! These helmets are next to impossible to obtain in the states.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zuAq1yZjZBM/TcMuwjD31CI/AAAAAAAAAGA/hrzjf-fHcrw/s1600/Jofa+366+Selanne.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-zuAq1yZjZBM/TcMuwjD31CI/AAAAAAAAAGA/hrzjf-fHcrw/s640/Jofa+366+Selanne.jpg" width="425" /></a></div><br />
Teemu Selanne, a known motorsport enthusiast, rocks his JOFA 366's with an Oakley straight visor, making it look more like a motorcycle helmet. Also, notice Selanne's mod to the ear loops, as he replaced the plastic ones for a more comfortable rubber ear loop, like those found on about every other brand of helmet. This may be a modification, but it could also be a different variation of the JOFA 366; research has found that pros have worn the JOFA 366 in a variety of ear loop styles. The JOFA 390's ear protection touches your ears and reduces your ability to hear, the JOFA 366 is the solution to that.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mG0rGSqW-3o/Tb-Z-LmPsTI/AAAAAAAAABM/E2WDt66rwUg/s1600/chases+13+bday+002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-mG0rGSqW-3o/Tb-Z-LmPsTI/AAAAAAAAABM/E2WDt66rwUg/s640/chases+13+bday+002.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="" style="clear: both;">So if you ever thought your JOFA 390 helmet looked slightly off and a little awkward compared to how the pro's JOFA helmets looked; you're right. It is possible to modify a Jofa 390, however it voids HECC and CSA certification. If you are in a men's league or a professional, it might be possible to get away with. So if you're a kid getting a hand-me-down, don't start cutting into it until you're older, until then it will be a waste of a perfectly fine helmet; and do yourself a favor and leave the certification stickers on regardless of how lame they are. </div><div class="" style="clear: both;"><br />
</div><div class="" style="clear: both;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AqR7obDjBTY/TcL2hPqPMiI/AAAAAAAAAEw/nsH2OSuZ0Us/s1600/18694b8_19.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-AqR7obDjBTY/TcL2hPqPMiI/AAAAAAAAAEw/nsH2OSuZ0Us/s320/18694b8_19.jpg" width="320" /></a><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0uKaG9K2baI/Tb-WMADxdXI/AAAAAAAAABE/xTjd7Sdsonc/s1600/113_1400.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="186" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0uKaG9K2baI/Tb-WMADxdXI/AAAAAAAAABE/xTjd7Sdsonc/s200/113_1400.jpg" width="200" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">To avoid doing a botch job imitation of Selanne or Jagr's helmet, do some research first; I plan on eventually posting some guidelines and advice on how to install a visor properly on these helmets so no one else ends up wearing some dangerous contraption like the one above. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1g1H13pDJgo/TcA4ZNgPemI/AAAAAAAAABY/2x16gtOUjqA/s1600/Jofa+Visor.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="542" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-1g1H13pDJgo/TcA4ZNgPemI/AAAAAAAAABY/2x16gtOUjqA/s640/Jofa+Visor.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Here's an image of Pat Verbeek wearing a JOFA 366 helmet, notice how his visor turns up to accommodate the helmet's screw mounts. This is the JOFA 995 visor made specifically for the JOFA 290-390 helmets; it doesn't seem that they would fit on any other helmet. JOFA helmets were not designed to accept second party visors (Itech, Bauer, 1Xcel, Oakley), and to correctly install them takes a bit of craftsmanship. Just check the difference of installation between Selanne's visor and Verbeek's. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VaITc74CLV4/TcOQK3NxnBI/AAAAAAAAAHY/o4W4Fm7b6LU/s1600/selanne+JOFA+366+helmet.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-VaITc74CLV4/TcOQK3NxnBI/AAAAAAAAAHY/o4W4Fm7b6LU/s1600/selanne+JOFA+366+helmet.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Aside from Selanne's modern Oakley visor, the difference is that Selanne removed the rivet in front of the ear, and added an extra hole above that to securely mount the visor. During Selanne's early years in the NHL, he mounted his helmet with a horizontal screw configuration on the front piece of the helmet, which also works, but is likely less durable and secure.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-g5rmx4pz9XQ/TcA_VfWFUHI/AAAAAAAAABk/Rf_oZREswBI/s1600/selanne+rookie.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-g5rmx4pz9XQ/TcA_VfWFUHI/AAAAAAAAABk/Rf_oZREswBI/s640/selanne+rookie.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Either way, Selanne seems to have been customizing his helmets for quite some time. The JOFA 366 is a sweet helmet without the visor, but theres something awesome about rocking a visor on these helmets.</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

I hope this answers any questions about sizing, fitting, maintenance, and model dimensions and specifications. Although these instructions specify the JOFA 390 SR/395 JR helmet models (the 390 SR model was released in the early 1990's, sported by the likes of Jaromir Jagr, Peter Forsberg, and Mats Sundin to name a few), I'm sure many of the instructions and warnings apply to all JOFA as well as other hockey helmets. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Don't forget, "Ice hockey is a sport with intrinsic hazards." </div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">and that you should, "Clean the helmet with a mild solution of soap and water."</div><div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Who would have guessed?</div>Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2530971626343683072.post-29124815838372963432011-05-02T22:02:00.005-05:002011-05-05T19:38:26.226-05:00The History of JOFAIt all began in the fall of 1926. Niss-Oskar wandered out to the shed on his family farm in Jonsson's Hole in Malung, a locality and the seat of Malung-Sälen Municipality, Dalarna County, Sweden, to produce skate straps of waste materials from Malung's many leather industries. What Niss-Oskar could not imagine then was that 76 years later, his start-up business would become the world's leading manufacturer of hockey protection equipment. The young company was Jonsson Factories, JOFA. Over the last several decades, JOFA has provided hockey protection to the world's best players. Peter Forsberg, Mats Sundin, Wayne Gretzky, Jaromir Jagr, Mario Lemieux and Teemu Selanne have all played with protection manufactured at the plant in Malung.<br />
<div><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ujnBM94YE_g/Tb9ovAIHb8I/AAAAAAAAAAk/k7cx2YatB5Q/s1600/Niss-Oskar+Jonsson.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ujnBM94YE_g/Tb9ovAIHb8I/AAAAAAAAAAk/k7cx2YatB5Q/s1600/Niss-Oskar+Jonsson.jpg" /></a></div><div><br />
</div>JOFA was founded in 1926 under a different name but one should perhaps say that JOFA started "for real" in 1933 when they bought the first factory, a former tannery, which went bankrupt. In 1963, Jonsson recieved the world patent for his hockey helmet. It was the first hockey product JOFA made. Ever since, helmets have been JOFA's signature product in ice hockey, as well as skiing, horseback riding, and bandy.<br />
<div><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RR8GKMoBZIM/TcCVzvmn3RI/AAAAAAAAADU/ozzy043ScAI/s1600/VM-hjalm_1963_2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RR8GKMoBZIM/TcCVzvmn3RI/AAAAAAAAADU/ozzy043ScAI/s1600/VM-hjalm_1963_2.jpg" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br />
</div></div>Niss-Oskar Jonsson died in 2002 at the age of 92. Since 2004, Jofa is a part of Reebok. Reebok has phased out the use of the Jofa brand on its hockey equipment, in favour of its core, CCM and Rbk brands.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0JmZNVQVAK0/TcCWMx8FrXI/AAAAAAAAADY/VWvKU1aCXz4/s1600/jofalution.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="107" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0JmZNVQVAK0/TcCWMx8FrXI/AAAAAAAAADY/VWvKU1aCXz4/s640/jofalution.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div>Note: I think it's a shame that Reebok would phase out JOFA, as it has been one of the most innovative and inspirational hockey equipment companies ever. I bet you can't find a piece of good equipment that can't be traced back to humble roots in Malung, Sweden. R.I.P. Niss-Oskar Jonsson and your great company, JOFA.<br />
